Let Larkspur Say It For You

Early summer has a carefree feel to it. It's my favorite part. School's out, the temps are just right, and life feels a little easier. It's the perfect time to text a friend: "Hey, wanna hang out today?" No particular reason. Just cuz.

Larkspur is like that. Wispy, blowing in the breeze, not a care in the world. It embodies lightness and whimsy — like the good old days, back when summer felt like it lasted forever.

My larkspur patch is here to stay. Every spring it sprouts up on its own from the seeds it dropped the season before. I don't have to do a thing except thin it out. Just like a good friend — it keeps showing up.

The Victorians agreed. Back in the days of prim and proper, when casual texting would have been absolutely deplorable, there was the language of flowers.

Floriography, they called it. Every flower carried a message.

Larkspur's message was carefree and simple: lightness, friendship, giddiness, affection — even first love. Who would have thought?

This time of year my larkspur is wrapping up its beauty contest. A few more harvest days and it will fade for the year. But come next spring, watch out. It will be back stronger than ever. Like life long friendships that only strengthen as the years go by.

Their message is timeless and rings down through the ages:

"Wanna hang out? I'm glad you're my friend. I'm here to stay."
